About Happenstance

Purely by happenstance, one summer at the Kerrville Folk Festival Dan Clanton and Doug Coppock began talking about songwriting, performing, and collaborating on a project back in Arkansas. Both singer-songwriters who had performed with groups and as solo acts all over the country, Dan and Doug were looking for a new format that would allow them to move beyond the limitations of solo performance while maintaining the intimacy and emotion of acoustic coffeehouses. When they got back home to Conway, Arkansas, purely by happenstance bassist Brooks Walthall was looking for a new way to channel his considerable talent, experience, and interest in acoustic music. As a result, HAPPENSTANCE was born-- a trio of acoustic singersongwriters who play original music (and the occasional cover tune), sing great harmony, and challenge their audience to have as much fun as they do!

“Good songs, and a lot of very spirited good energy...”—Steve Gillette

Happenstance members say, “Electrifying Acousticana is the term that we use when people say ‘What kind of music do you play?’ We don't always know what to tell them, but Electrifying Acousticana is as close as we've been able to come.”

“..Recordings and performances that slip over you like long lost flannel shirts...”—Tom Kimmel

Drawing upon acoustic music, folk, and Americana primarily, Happenstance plays a melting pot of musical genres, styles, and influences. The goal of every HAPPENSTANCE performance is to get the audience involved in the show and makes sure everyone leaves with a smile on their face and a song in their heart.

“Real songs by and about real people…”—Eric Schwartz
